A Centre for Music for Plymouth

As you will be well aware, an eminent urban planner, David Mackay, has produced a plan for Plymouth. His proposals include a number of “iconic” buildings, which he considers to be essential to the regeneration and rejuvenation of Plymouth. One of those is an Arena/Conference centre linked to a refurbished Palace Theatre: a Centre for Music.

Plymouth Music Accord sees this as a golden opportunity to develop the music culture in Plymouth and get built a long-needed Centre for Music. We would like to ask for your support to achieve this aim.

The PMA's main aim is a Centre for Music but, in order to achieve this, the PMA recognises that it has to encourage music generally in and around Plymouth.

So far as the Centre for Music itself is concerned, this will not just be a concert venue for classical music, but it will include all other types of music and it will offer a whole range of musical facilities as follows:-

• A concert hall large enough for a full symphony orchestra and audience of over 1,000.
• A smaller more intimate facility for chamber music.
• A more relaxed venue for jazz and folk music.
• A music lending library.
• A music “school”, which will focus primarily on instrumental playing.
• A home for Plymouth Youth Orchestra.
• Facilities for education and practice.
• Instrument hire.
• A computer suite with Sibelius software.
• An administration centre to co-ordinate musical activities and concerts.
• An information centre.
• A social centre including a restaurant, bar, café, lounge and meeting place.
• Recording facilities.

At the same time as planning the Centre for Music, the PMA wants to build on the tremendous amount of musical talent that exists here in the South-West. We want to encourage all musical organisations, be they professional, amateur or educational to make the most of this opportunity. We want to develop a culture of making and listening to live music, which will support the Centre for Music. YOU are the people who can make this happen.

WE NEED YOUR VOICE RAISED IN SUPPORT OF MUSIC AND IN SUPPORT OF THE CENTRE FOR MUSIC.
