Plymouth Music Accord

Recognised by Plymouth City Council as the principal organisation for classical music in the City, The Accord is made up of individuals, orchestras & choirs, and local music promoters, and helps to publicise and co-ordinate the performance and appreciation of live music.

History

The PMA was set up in 1997 by the late Derek Amphlett and Charles May, whom many will remember as the founder of the Plymouth Music Trust, which in effect the PMA replaces.

Achievements

  • Bringing together the main performers of music in the City, both amateur and professional, including the South West Sinfonietta, Plymouth Symphony Orchestra, Ten Tors Orchestra, the Philharmonic Choir, Opera South West, the City of Plymouth Concert Band, the University of Plymouth Choir and Orchestra and Plymouth Jazz Club.

  • Publication of a diary of events for music-lovers throughout the Plymouth area. This is sent by post to members. Copies are also available from libraries and information centres.

  • Co-operation in the publication of the Plymouth Classical Concert Diary website

  • The Young Musicians’ Platform has provided first professional concert appearances by three local musicians in 2002, one playing a concerto with the South West Sinfonietta and the other two giving lunchtime recitals in the City’s Museum & Art Gallery series. Since then a number of young musicians have been helped to begin a musical career.
Schoolchildren have been provided with free tickets to several orchestral concerts to give them the opportunity to hear live classical music.

  • Staged a series of three orchestral concerts in Plymouth Guildhall in spring 2002, with both local and international soloists and orchestras, and two May Music Festivals featuring renowned international stars such as Stephen Hough, Seth Lakeman and Jaquie Dankworth.
