Plymouth
Music Accord

| Recognised by Plymouth City Council as
the principal organisation for classical music in the
City, The Accord is made up of individuals, orchestras
& choirs, and local music promoters, and helps to
publicise and co-ordinate the performance and
appreciation of live music. |
History
The PMA was set up in 1997 by the
late Derek Amphlett and Charles May, whom many will remember as the founder
of the Plymouth Music Trust, which in effect the PMA
replaces.

Achievements

Bringing together the main
performers of music in the City, both amateur and
professional, including the South West
Sinfonietta, Plymouth Symphony Orchestra, Ten Tors Orchestra, the
Philharmonic Choir, Opera South West, the City of
Plymouth Concert Band, the University of Plymouth
Choir and Orchestra and Plymouth Jazz Club.
Publication of a diary of events
for music-lovers throughout the Plymouth area.
This is sent by post to members. Copies are also
available from libraries and information centres.

The Young Musicians
Platform has provided first professional concert
appearances by three local musicians in 2002, one
playing a concerto with the South West
Sinfonietta and the other two giving lunchtime
recitals in the Citys Museum & Art
Gallery series. Since then a number of young musicians have been helped to begin a musical career.
Schoolchildren have been provided with free tickets to several orchestral concerts to give them the opportunity to hear live classical music.

Staged a series of three
orchestral concerts in Plymouth Guildhall in
spring 2002, with both local and international
soloists and orchestras, and two May Music Festivals featuring renowned international stars such as Stephen Hough, Seth Lakeman and Jaquie Dankworth.

Aims &
Objectives
To promote, facilitate and encourage the
appreciation and performance of music for the benefit of
the whole community - especially the young - in the city
of Plymouth
The Accord seeks to:
- Assist the City Council and other funding bodies
to identify and provide adequate financial
support for music making.
- Represent our member organisations in discussions with the City Council and others concerning facilities and other issues relevant to concertgoers and music promoters.
- Raise the profile of all types of musical
activity in Plymouth.
- Bring together, and lend support to, all groups
engaged in music.
- Promote musical performances, whether Early,
Classical, Jazz, Contemporary or Popular
- Publish a regular diary of music events in the
area - see Concert Diary
- Develop further already successful "Young
Musicians' Platform" to encourage young
professional recitalists from the area

Plymouth Music Accord publishes a printed
concert diary with details of all the concerts promoted
by members of the Accord. This is distributed to all
members, and to local libraries, music shops and tourist
and information outlets.
The Accord co-operates with the
publication of an online concert diary
Plymouth Classical Music Concert Diary which includes
the latest information on the Accord's and most other
concerts in Plymouth and surrounding area. This site also
provides a general resource for musiclovers, with links
to music websites and organisations.
